While it is a very brief document, containing only 12 cryptic sentences, the famous and mysterious Emerald Tablet is said to contain within it the secrets of the whole universe. It is the work of Hermes Trismegistus (Thrice Greatest Hermes), who is inseparable from the Egyptian God Thoth and Greek God Hermes who is the personification of the planet Mercury. Hermes is known and revered as being the ‘Messenger of the Gods’. In this role, he acted as a divine messenger who was able to bring the wisdom of the gods to humanity. The twelve statements contained in the Emerald Tablet were revealed to Hermes Trismegistus by the goddess Isis-Urania herself as a gift offering and means for humanity to regain their divine status.
Alchemists across the ages have studied the Emerald Tablet as the primary source of alchemical wisdom and have sought to unlock its secrets so they could undertake and complete the Magnum Opus, the great work of alchemy.
The ‘great work’ is the alchemy of human regeneration and the creation of the deathless solar body. It is the process whereby the alchemist is able to transform and transmute the unrefined matter of their organism and consciousness into a higher order of spiritualised perfection.
